THE HERDS

From the Congo Basin to the Arctic Circle, THE HERDS is an unprecedented, itinerant, citizen-driven, collaborative, and participatory public art project with both monumental and humanistic geographical ambitions.

In the face of an unprecedented climate emergency, THE HERDS is described, in its intentions, as engaged art. This monumental and immersive public art project, both a celebration and a cry for help, aims to raise awareness by showcasing the beauty and power of nature. Starting in the spring of 2025, this unparalleled theatrical odyssey will feature life-sized puppets of animals—from zebras to large primates, including giraffes—that will travel through 11 countries and 20 cities over more than 20,000 km. A journey that, from the Congo Basin to the Arctic Circle, embodies the migration of wildlife towards the north, in search of more hospitable territories, symbolizing the fight for species survival in a world in crisis.

THE HERDS is much more than an artistic performance. It is a vast climate awareness campaign, complemented by a training and community participation program that invites everyone to become an agent of change. Designed to inspire a strong emotional connection, it encourages empathy and awareness of our role in preserving life. This mobilizing project has already brought together a network of local organizations, volunteers, and climate experts and also proposes an innovative educational program planned to work with 3,000 partner classrooms, offering educational resources designed to enlighten youth about current climate challenges.

To ensure that THE HERDS is also a model of sustainability, the life-sized puppets, made from recycled materials, mostly cardboard, reflect a strong commitment to the environment. Moreover, the impact of the project, both online and in-person, will be rigorously measured, ensuring follow-up on both qualitative and quantitative outcomes to demonstrate its mobilization power and educational reach. With over 500,000 spectators expected in person and millions of participants via social media, THE HERDS aims to transform this fundamental current issue into a universal human story. By combining art and concrete action, The Walk Productions, the nonprofit organization behind this project, seeks to restore the central role of arts and culture in the fight for the future of our planet. By making this poetic odyssey a platform for collective expression and the hope of a cooperative future, THE HERDS offers a new voice for engaged art and invites everyone to join a global climate mobilization, where the true meaning of the word "together" is fully realized. Au Contraire Productions handles the creative side and realization for France, in close collaboration with the artistic direction of The Walk.

The team behind The Walk Productions, who initiated this project, is the same one that produced LITTLE AMAL, a 3.5-meter-high puppet symbolizing Syrian refugee children, whose journey through seventeen countries and meeting two million people was hailed by The Observer in 2021 as "the most ambitious public art and educational program ever attempted."
